I went through a similar thing with my weight and a lull in backpacking until about 4 years ago then realised I wanted to do something about both.

My excuse at the time was that I had young kids, was working a standard 60hour week plus travel throughout Europe and didnt have time. Ok well I didnt! I also went from around 10st/7lbs up to 13st. 
Changed the job routine, updated my kit (and still havent stopped), walked with the kids, got the wife interested in camping and since then its been much better. 

Would still like more time in the hills but I will make do with the improvements I have engineered for now!</description>
